Our Scanning Process

Each slide we scan starts out on a light box for evaluation. Next, it is carefully cleaned with a film cloth and/or any dust is blown off using compressed air. The slide is then inserted into the scanner and a preview is done. We then load the scan settings you choose on the quote request form. After that initial adjustments are made (if needed) and once everything is set we scan. After the scan the slide is put back on our light box so it can be compared to the scan on our color corrected screen. We then use the slide as a guide to do any further color corrections. For slides that have not yet deteriorated we basically match the scan to the slide. For slides that have deteriorated, we try to make the image look good. Finally, the scan is saved numerically and the process repeats. All this is done for every slide! You can easily see how this adds up to a LOT of work, even if you only have a small number of slides.

Our Scanners

We use Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED professional film scanners with the MA-21 adapter to scan your 2"x2" slides one at a time by hand. Yes, we scan your slides one at a time BY HAND; we DO NOT use the SF-210 auto loader!

Requirements...All Film Types in 2" x 2" Mounts Are Considered 35mm

Because 2" x 2" slides can contain many different film types, we treat anything in a 2" x 2" mount as a "35mm slide." That means everything in a 2" x 2" mount is priced the same, click here for prices. 35mm film is by far the most common film type in a 2" x 2" mount but you should be aware that there are others, and they do not all scan the same. A few of the other film types are 110, 126, and 127 "super slides." The mounts can be cardboard or plastic, 1.0mm-3.2mm thick. Here's what these slides will look like...

Here's what a standard 35mm slide looks like. This is by far the most common type of mount out there. The frame size (black area) is usually about 34mm x 23mm, although it does vary by manufacturer.

Here's what a 126 "instamatic" slide looks like, probably the second most common type. The frame size (black area) is usually about 28mm x 28mm. Now due to the aperture of the scanner (36.8mm x 25.1mm) about 1.45mm will be cropped from the top and bottom of these slides. Move your mouse over the picture to see the area that will get cropped out (red).

Here's what a 110 slide looks like. The frame size of this is about 12mm x 16mm. Since these are obviously very small frames we recommend this type be scanned at a minimum of 2000dpi. If you happen to have the small 110 30mm x 30mm mount slides you will need to buy 50mm x 50mm adaptors like this and place the small slide in them so we can scan them; one adaptor for every slide.

Here's what a 127 "super slide" looks like. The frame size is about 40mm x 40mm. Unfortunately, a significant portion cannot be scanned due to the aperture of the scanner. Move your mouse over the picture to see the area that will get cropped out (red).

Other Types.............

Yes, there are other types of 2" x 2" slide mounts. If it's in a 2" x 2" mount then you can send it to us for scanning. Just remember that the aperture of our scanner limits the scan area to that shown when you move your mouse over the 127 slide image.
